hey all. I'm new to the Forum's here.
Got a tech question for the swap gods.
I have a 2004 Ford Ranger with the auto transfer case. and i HATE it. it worked good for the 1st few months then it took a dump. i pulled the plugs apart on the bottom and found them to be filled with dirt and grit. ok, so i cleaned them and put die-electric greese on them and it switches from 2wd-HI to 4wd-HI great but is a Biatch to get in/out of 4-LO. i found a smokin' deal on a transfer case from a 95 or 97 ranger (cant remember which) with a 5spd manual. My truck has a 5spd manual too...and from what i can see, they are the same transmissions. so could i swap this transfer case and be on my merry way? what would you guys do/suggest? thanks all! :icon_thumby:

I'd do the swap if the the replacement case is manual. Not really worth swapping in another electric 1354.

thats the plan. its a manual transfer case out of a slightly earlier (95 or 97) Ranger. it has a 5 speed manual and so does my truck so i figured it could be done but just wanted to be sure. i assume my auto hubs will work just fine with the manual case then?

The only thing you'll need is a new driveshaft. The manual case your using was for the ttb setup, you'll need a shaft from a 95-97 explorer.

ok, cool. just the rear? or the front? or both lol

im in the same situation as he is in and is it a direct replacement? i know you have to cut out the floor a lil bit and is there anyone on here who has a tread with some pics of them doing it i couldnt find any when i searched for some possibly with a new ranger

Its a direct swap, you just need the front driveshaft from an explorer as mentioned.
You won't need to cut the floor, just use the trans tunnel cover plate from the donor truck.
