I have a 93 Ranger - 4.0, D35. I just replaced the front auto hubs and spindle needle bearings. They were giving me problems. I thought that was my only problem. I got all that fixed and thought I was ready to go. But that was the least of problems. The hubs are working fine know. The problem now is that 4 high only works in reverse (4 low is ok). When i try to go forward I can hear a buzzing sound and it want lock. Every once in while it will lock in for a short time but won't stay in. When I hear this buzzing I have observed that the front driveshaft is not turning (transfer case to front chunk). The electric shift motor seems to be working fine. For a long time now whenever I would hit the 4x4 button I would here the buzzing I referred to earlier. When I would stop I could hear it engage. I thought the buzzing was the auto hubs. Apparently it was the tranfer case the whole time. Now when it does lock in it work a short time and then it will a terrible racket and go back to 2 wheel drive. What do you guys think is causing this? Is my transfer case shot? I have one available from a 92 explorer. Next Saturday I plan to swap them. Any thoughts?

thanks

take the electric motor off and try locking in manual mode, ( could save u some time) electric motor may be the trouble instead of the transfer case

Sounds like it's not stopping in the proper position, like the motor is turning the shaft past 4-hi and into neutral before stopping.

Take the motor off and manuall shift it with the shaft on the back of the case. The case is marked with the gears, 2H, 4H, 4L.

The auto hubs are locked by the front driveshaft spinning. The only noise they make is a click when they engage.

But why would it work fine in reverse? It only does the buzzing and clunking in forward.

update

Hey guys to give you an update I replace the transfer case (used) and it worked better, but it still was not shifting properly so I found a used shift motor and that seems to have fixed it. It is working better than ever. I really think I had a messed up transfer case and shift motor...

I got the transfer case (used) and the labor for the replacing it and replacing the spindle needle bearings for $275 from a local mechanic. I thought that was pretty good price. They worked on it for 3 days all total.

I am glad to be back rolling in time for hunting season here in MS.

thanks
