transfer case noise

I have a 2001 ranger that has a whine coming from the t-case when not engaged. I have had two transfer cases in this truck and they both had the same noise. Is this common with all rangers this model? When I engage 4HI only hear it when i let off the gas going down hill:annoyed:. maybe slack in the chain?
