So I dropped my transmission and after an insane headache of finding new lines got it back together. However when I went to reattach my transfer case shifter it doesn't move right. It just pulls straight back and doesn't pull to the side to go into neutral and then 4L. It also pulls into the transmission shifter almost. If anyone has an idea. Whether it be I'm just being dumb and rotated the metal plate wrong or something. (FM145 transmission if that helps)

I don't know anything about the older manual shift transfer case linkage, but with the way mine works it sounds like you may have the shifter lever mounted on the wrong side of the lower shifter stub. I get that from the description of "pulls into the transmission shifter almost." That does not explain why it pulls straight back without having to pull sideways though. My shifter guide plate cannot be mounted backward but mine is an MD50 and a later design.

Your setup could be totally different and my advice could be totally meaningless. You should get in there and evaluate what is going on and go from there. Sorry if I can't be of further help.

No that is a help! I'll spin it around and see. Idk think the plate can be mounted backwards either but it could be where it attached to the transfer case is backwards like you said. That would explain it "binding" against the plate and just forcing it's way out. I'll give it a shot when I get back home. I appreciate it! Will update hopefully.

This is how it should be attached, ignore the circles and washers in the pic, it's from a custom shifter writeup I did but it's basically the same setup for you.
