Friday evening I was coming home in the snow and everything seemed to be fine up until I got to my driveway. I tried to turn around and noticed I was slipping and sliding much more than usual for the amount snow we had. When I put it in reverse it started to spin. It shouldn't have spun because I only had a couple inches of snow and was in 4WD. Even with minimal spin, it should have been no problem. Then, here's where the real trouble begins, I heard the worst grinding sound I have ever heard coming from around the transmission area. I think it may have been the transfer case going out. I let off the gas and let the noise drift to a stop, then double-checked to see if the shift lever slipped out. Everything was in place, so I tried again, and I went a couple feet and again heard the noise. I put it in Low to see if it still happened, and it stopped. I finally got turned around and pulled up the hill. My wife was watching from the window and asked what was going on. She told me the back tires were spinning pretty bad and the front tires were just "along for the ride".
Does this sound like I lost my t-case, or is there another possible reason for all the ruckus? I haven't gotten up under it yet because I now have snow up to the windows and don't feel like digging anymore.
By the way- 88 BII, 2.9, A4LD and manual shift t-case. Pretty much stock.
Thanks,
Danny
