i've got a 98 ranger and a totalled 97 5.0 explorer but i don't want the awd drive case out of the explorer and the advance adapters kit is $1500 installed which is way to expensive for my budget. i wanted to know if there is a ford transfer case that has the vss sensor in it and will mount to the 4r70 that i can find at salvage like the 4406 or 1356? and can i use the electric shift controls in my truck already with the fullsize electric shift cases with some re wiring?

thanks

The 4406 is slightly smaller than the 1356, but still might need frame clearancing, or you mod your trans X-member by drilling two holes to move the trans more to the passenger side to give you the needed clearance. Yes, you can make the shift motor work with your current setup, either by repinning the plug, or by possibly taking your original shifter motor and harness and installing it on the replacement tcase :icon_thumby:

i already found a 1356 but i thought that the 4406 was the slightly larger one. my mistake. is the 1356 bigger toward the drivers side or just bulkier? the fuel filter won't be beside the t-case as i am using the explorer lines.

The 56 is actually less bulkier, but wider on the front output. There is a tab on the end of the 56 on the front output side, you can trim that tab off, which will give you a little more room. If you can, I would highly recommend re-drilling your trans X-member to move it to the passenger side to give you the clearance you need rather than trim the framerail...

On my Ranger, it was possible to move the entire engine/transmission/t-case 3/8" toward the passenger side by slotting and rewelding the holes in the trans crossmember and engine plates. This increased the amount of clearance from the 4406 to the DS frame rail and from the slip yoke to the fuel tank. You can't go much farther than 3/8" without getting the exhaust too close to the frame on the PS.

I know that others have used the 4406 without the repositioning. Maybe the tolerance stack up was different creating a larger clearance or maybe the frame rail was trimmed slightly or maybe the t-case contacts the frame occasionally. Not sure. Every truck is different.

These photos show the results of using the modified mounts in my 2003. I believe that the extra clearance was needed, at least for my truck it was. The powertrain moves around more than most people think, especially off road.

i'm avoiding moving the mounts over unless i see nessesary. im just trying to find a 4406 t case right now at salvage and not having any luck so far. what vehicles did these cases all come in? or is it just in 96-99 f series and expedition?

thanks, durfey

I tried to use a 1356 as i wanted to use a bronco case with a flanged rear output instead of the slip yoke. However, it would have required either shifting the drivetrain or notching the frame, so i used a 4406 instead. The 4406 is close, but fit without mods.

1996 still used the 56, 97+ F-series and full size SUV's uses the 4406...
