Transfer case fluid?

Home depot carries the teflon crayon in the plumbing section. 75-140w is the newest service bulletin from ford regarding the LSD fluid recommendation. There are some Ford service specialists that may have the actual bulletin number that may chime in.

When Ford discontinued Mercon they released the same fluid as "transfer case fluid" and the price went way up. That's when I started buying Valvoline's Dexron/Mercon fluid instead. When I retired in 2017, Mercon V and LV were not approved for transfer cases or manual transmissions. Both cost more than the Valvoline fluid, too.
But. Originally Ford said never use Mercon V in a tansmission that called for Mercon, then they discontinued Mercon and told us Mercon V was "backward compatible". I guess they shouldn't say "never".

On these type of plugs? I thought that the diffs and transfer case all have the kind of plugs but I read that they are tapered threads so just snug them up good and they wont leak?View attachment 116027
Whoops, my mistake... Yes, teflon tape or paste is fine on those (sorry, got your thread confused with a different thread here, was thinking the M5OD & engine).

Thanks Doug, mine has an open diff so I used regular STP 80/90 both front and rear.

Walt, I read that Ford said NOT to use the Mercon LV under any circumstances in transfer cases that specified the Motorcraft xl-12. And when they discontinued the Xl-12 they said Mercon LV is now recommended.😆

4x4, I ended up not using anything and snugged them down good on my diffs. If they leak I can always add some Teflon later. Haven't gotten to the transfer case oil but that's hopefully the last job I need to do under the truck so I can spray it with fluid film (or something else) before winter.

Well, if the Mercon LV is indeed approved, that will work fine for me since I need it anyway in the 2019's transfer case. That won't save on shelf space though. I still need Mercon/Mercon V for the 2011's transmission, LV for the 2019's transfer case, and Mercon ULV for the 2019's transmission.

Cheap Mercon rated ATF from Walmart or any auto parts store is all you need.

I already bought a couple quarts of the LV but Im waffling on whether to use it or get dex/merc. I’m sure either would be fine.🤔

I changed my transfer case fluid today and by the look of the fluid it had never been changed. Another reason I think that is because the transfer case fill plug and also my front diff fill plug had this hard yellow goop (like epoxy) across them. I think maybe for warranty purposes so the dealer could tell if anyone had removed them before? Not really sure but the transfer case and front diff fluid were both nasty

My strategy was to attempt to intentionally overfull it on my unlevel driveway and then drive 1/10 of a mile down the road to a flat parking lot to remove the fill plug and drain the excess into a plastic dish. When I took the fill plug out though the level was perfect? Strange because I put in a quart and a half and I thought the fill capacity was only 1 25 quarts? Maybe the parking lot wasn't perfectly level either (I'm sure not exact but it looked level enough)? Do you guys think Im good to go or is the transfer case fluid level so critical that I need to find a perfectly level spot to check it?

I used the Mercon LV as I had already bought it and by all accounts it works fine I hope lol
