I have a 1999 Ford Ranger 4.0 4x4. I want to replace the transfer case fluid and can not find a drain plug..... Do I have to suck it out of the Fill hole or am I just not looking in the right place for the drain plug. Thanks.

drain plug should be on the back of the low side.

its behind the big weight on the back you have to remove the weight to get the drain plug. word of advice remove the fill plug b4 you remove the drain plug. comes out easier and less mess

There might be a damper near the bottom of the case. It's a round metal thing held in with 4 bolts. If you have one, you need to remove it and the drain plug will be right behind it.

i thought the same thing when i first did that. I kept think "now where the hell did they put the freakin' drain plug- sneeky bastards"

I never really got why that damper was there but i guess it's there to serve it's purpose.

It is also a good thing to know you can refill it before draining it. If you require something to get one of the plugs out you might need to drive to get it.

Its a vibration damper. It reduces drive-line vibrations along the whole length of the power train and drive-line and in some extreme cases, can keep the drain plug from rattling out of the case.

what kind of fluid does the transfer case take? i have an '85 BII All Automatic. Ive read the manual takes gear oil and automatic takes Tranny fluid. What viscosity do they take also?

Transfercase uses Mercon ATF

TSB says transfercase takes transfercase fluid.

Basically Merc with friction modifier in it. Don't get that stuff in your tranny, a little bit will toast it.

I just changed my trans and transfer case, both manual shifts, with Mercon V. Any issues with that?
