I had a new clutch and slave cylinder put in my 94 ranger last week. While the mechanic was at it, I had him change the fluid in the transfer case and 5 speed transmission. Now, the 4x4 won't work right at all. I took the shift motor off and it shifted fine while it was off the t-case. I put it back on and it worked fine for a while. Today it doesn't work again. Is there a sensor or something that won't let it shift if the fluid is low, maybe? Do I need to replace or rebuild the shift motor? Also I am losing power for some reason. At 3/4 throttle, it picks up speed fine. When the gas peddle hits the floor, it just stops gaining speed. I replaced the fuel filter yesterday but, no change. Thanks for any help you guys can give me.

as far as the t-case... the electric shift ones are known for crapping out. There is NO low fluid sensor/switch on the t-case

Try a new shift motor..... that should fix it.. Or even better yet, swap in a 1354 manual shift t-case

As far as the hesition at full throttle check the basic stuff... Instead of just replacing parts maybe it would be a good idea to do some diagnotics.

Get a fuel press. tester and make SURE you are not loosing fuel pressure. It could be a bad fuel pump...

It could be a ton of other stuff do.

-bad ignition components (plugs, wires, coils, module)
-Fuel pump (or clogged in-tank filter)
-restricted exhuast (clogged cat??)
-Bad o2 sensor
-Failing ECU (not very common on these trucks)
-Stuck EGR valve

Maybe taking it to a good mechanic and have it properly diagnosed would be a good idea if your not getting anywhere.

Thanks RangerDanger. I picked up another shift motor this morning from an explorer from the junk yard. Not sure it's any good either but, I'll give it a try. I saw a new one on ebay for $74.00. If the used one don't work, I'll order the new one. The guy that replaced the clutch had to cut the exhaust to get the tranny out and he welded it back. Maybe some rust or something got in the cat. converter. I didn't have either problem before the new clutch. The check engine light is not lit so maybe it's something simple. Thanks again for the input.

could a vacuum line be disconnected? do you have the vacuum activated hubs?

No, I replaced the hubs with warn manual locking ones at 37,000 miles. I went through 3 sets of auto hubs before the warranty was up and Ford wouldn't replace them any more.

My new shift motor came in today and 25 minutes later, I had 4x4 again. This is great timing because we have a snow storm coming tomorrow night. I still have the "losing power" issues.
