i have a 1985 ranger 4x4 with a manual transmission and i blew out the front slip yoke on the transfer case and im going to be swapping explorer running gear onto my ranger and i would like to also swap a bw1354 manual shift transfer case out of an explorer in for more strength but i need to know which year explorers have transfer cases that will bolt up to my manual trans. thanks for any input in advance.

thats what i thought but i knew there were a lot of people on here more knowledgeable than myself and needed the reassurance lol thanks for the info :headbang:

the transfer case just has too be off of a manual transmission explorer right?

Rangers have them too. All RBV cases are interchangeable so you could get a manual case from behind an auto, although I'm not sure that was offered.

doesn't matter whether it's an explorer or ranger or whether it's auto or manual trans. 90-97 ranger or 90-94 explorer. if you are using your manual trans from your 85 the transfercase shifter will not work, you will need to make a custom one. you will also need to shorten the front driveshaft and lengthen the rear. the best bet is to get the m5od trans from a ranger or explorer and swap that in, it will make the drivetrain swap a bolt in affair with trimming of the floor around the shifter being the the only thing requiring anything other than basic hand tools.

questions... im swapping in a dana 35 explorer front axle and an 8.8 explorer rear axle so driveshafts will be an issue... if i run my 5spd since i like stick offroad with the bw1354 wont a stock explorer front driveshaft work? is the bw1354 manual in a ranger the exact same as in an explorer outputs included? and to swap in an automatic trans and transfer case will i need to swap ecu also?

Yeah the Explorer drive shaft will work, and yes the cases are the same outputs and all.

i just wanna get rid of that garbage slip yoke that came on it and have actual ujoints on both ends of my front drive shaft lol and the rear drive shaft has to either be fabbed or get a spacer i believe.?. lol

Indeed it was, the 1354M in my B2 is from an Auto Explorer.

I thought it may have been, but most RBVs I've seen have been Auto/Auto or Man/Man and if not it's been a manual tranny with an Auto t-case.

also my truck is reg cab long bed so im not sure if the spacer off the back of the transfer case will make a stock driveshaft work or what vehicle that driveshaft would come from =/

"if you are using your manual trans from your 85 the transfercase shifter will not work, you will need to make a custom one."

where does the difference in shifter length come from?

shameless bump lol... any more info on the subject people?

where does the difference in shifter length come from?

The mounting points on the 4wd extension housing vs the location of the shifter on the 1354 t-case.

You MIGHT be able to just switch the little lever on the t-case and use your factory linkage.

There is some reading for you here, I think if changing the shift arm and using whatever linkage came with the tranny works for switching a C5/1354 would work with whatever tranny you have and a 1354 too. If it doesn't, and nobody shoots me down before then, you will be the first to know :icon_thumby:

86+ Ranger with whatever bed config you have should have a driveshaft with a flange on both yokes, my '86 parts truck did.
