is there any extra plugs on the 97 automatic trans for a trans temp gauge or do you have to drill a new hole in the pan for the sensor?

I believe that an auto trans temp guage should be measuring a worst case temp

Worst case temp would be measured at the "out" port to the tranny cooler directly from the transmission case.

I would splice into that line and mount the temp sensor in a "T" fitting.

Thats where we usually mount the sensor is the return line, some of the better tranny temp gauges gives you the fittings to splice into the return cooler line , but sensor can be mounted in pan but better in return line.

Click Here Doing it this way will give you the actual transmission temperature, not the "worst case" or "best case."
