hey guys im replacing the clutch and slave cylinder in my truck and ran into some problems first how does the shifter come off is the bolt on the bottom a tapered thing or something? how do i get to the top bell housing bolts? do i drop the trany cross member abd go over the top of it or what?? thanks for your help

Take the 17mm nut off the bolt on the bottom of the shifter. Put it on the other side of the bolt and tighten it. It will pull the bolt out. Then the shifter just lifts off.

I like to put a flex-head gear wrench on the top bolts from the top of the engine bay and get them off that way. The other option is to remove the trans cross member and let the trans sag down a bit. It will pull the engine along with it and give a clearer shot from underneath.

As for the trans cross member itself, set a floor jack under the trans, remove the cross member completely, and then use the jack to let the trans down in a controlled fashion.

do i need to remove the exhaust y pipe to beable to take the trans out?

It is not 100% necessary, but I find it to be the easier route since you have to turn the trans about 180* to make it fit out if you don't.

yes, sometimes you can wiggle the trans through but it's way easier to just cut the exhaust and re-weld it later. To get the top bell bolts drop the crossmember and have a jack on the trans and lower it just a little bit, dont let it just hang, although you can I dont recommend it, if you have swivel sockets use them with a 3ft. extension and they will be a piece of cake. If you have anymore questions I'll help ya I've pulled plenty of ranger trans also adsm08 knows his stuff so take his advice and keep it.
