I replaced the trans filter the other day but now i'm speculating whether I got the correct one or not. I am unsure what trans goes behind the 4.0 in my truck (even though I believe it's a 5R55E now) and I told the lady at AZ I wanted the filter for the shallow pan. I had the choice between the shallow and deep pan and I was not completely sure which one I had. I'm thinking that since my truck is a 98 4.0 auto 4x4 supercab that it's a deep pan 5R55E. Can anyone shed some light on this? I've seen questions in the past about the shallow vs. deep pan but noone has really come up with an answer. I looked on RockAuto and i'm seeing two different part numbers. One I presume is for the 4x2 shallow pan and one is the 4x4 deep pan.

On a side note, i'm feeling a thud upon take off (believed to be the notorious driveshaft problem) and then i'm feeling a bit of a thud when shifting from 2nd-3rd and then again from 3rd-4th gears.

Any ideas?

Tom, if your trans is a stock 4x4 (the one that came in it),
then you have the deep pan, and it takes the deep filter.
The 2 wheel drives have the shallow pan.

The purpose of the deep pan is to keep the trans from being
starved for fluid when the vehicle is on steep angles in
off-road situations.

The shallow pan will work in a street driven truck, but it's best
to change it at your next fluid change.

The filter bolt is different too; it's longer for the deep pan.
Make sure you're using the correct length bolt for the particular
filter. (Some kits have a spacer included for use with the shallow
pan.)

The bolt is longer? That's strange. The shallow filter bolt worked just fine. Maybe it hasn't caught the threads all the way in there. I will replace it tomorrow when I get to the shop. I've got enough Mercon V laying around! Thanks the help Runnin'!
