Trans. Problems

Hello,
Im new to the site and i was hoping to get some information about my transmission problems. I have a 1994 Ranger 2WD with the M5OD-R1, top linkage. I began having issues with with first and second gear engaging. The shifter would slam into my dash when i shifted into first but the gears would not engage. I removed the trans and took off the top, the shift fork is not broken and i can engage the gears by sliding the "collar" over the gears the arms also looked good. I called ford they said often the shifter would fail so i bought a Hurst shifter for it and it still doesn't work. Can anyone help me? Im no mechanical genius but i do all my own work on my vehicles and i have a basic understanding. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

I didn't have a 1-2 issue with mine but a 3-4. Turns out the syncro went bad and locked 3-4 together. Can you roll start in 3rd gear & higher?

Yeah i can start in 3rd gear. Sometimes first and or second will work when we had it apart the syncro for 2nd looked warn but we were able to slide the collar thing like it was being shifted and it worked fine. someone i talked to mentioned a ball spring for the first/second shift arm but idk what that is.
