well finally got the trans out of my rusty ass truck. first off a new clutch is 100 off ebay, replace now or wait because mine looks pretty decent to me plus i want it on the road asap, pilot bearing and slave both looked good as well. Do i need a new gasket between the trans and t case, what oil do i put back in the trans, and i fill the trans through the shifter hole correct?

how about some info on the rig? year? what trans? mazda m5od's take ATF. and there's fill/drain plugs on the driverside of it.

I'd get a clutch locally from an auto parts store...many should have the clutch kit in stock and it'll be warrantyed locally to you, which is alot easier than online BS shipping garbage.

Stock there's a gasket between the trans tailhousing and the tcase. Some don't run anything there, some use silocone between the two, some use a stock gasket. Nobodys told me any real reason why there's a gasket there and why there's a drain out squiggly at the bottom. IMO, whatever you use it don't matter.

Yeah, what he said.
And you'll regret not changing that slave cylinder. I've seen it too many times.

Have you ever seen 2 metal parts put together without some sort of gasket or plate...? Yeah, me neither.
And the "squiggly drain", both the output of the trans and the input of the t-case are sealed. That leaves a giant air pocket, it allows the air to expand and contract w/o ruining the seals. Also when fluid leaks from the seals it sorta "notifies" you by letting it out.

BTW FX4wannabe, did you decide to sell me a set of them shift boots yet...?

Then again, people also say to just silocone it all and fill the squiggly. Which I don't get. lol. Let the tailhousing fill with ATF if there's a leak. Cool. So when I go in and fix that leak, I'll have an ATF mess all over the ground. Makes alot of sense. haha. But I'm one of those who checks fluids all the time due to having bad seals in the past. Maybe I'm more attentive than I have to be. I just leave all my crap stock there. stock ford paper gasket.

Nah...keepin' 'em all I suppose.

well its an 87 ext cab 4x4 5 speed 2.9l. i went ahead and ordered a reman clutch pressure plate slave and throwout from my local store for like 70 total so im happy with that and ill feel a lot better about changing it all. for trans fluid i got atf and im going to add lucas trans additive. they told me to put silicone between the 2. thanks for the input guys shes gettin closer!

There's a really good chance that you do NOT have a M5OD trans. If that's the case you do NOT put ATF in it. You use gear oil. I recommend you read THIS PAGE to find out which trans you have before going any further.

My 89 4WD Ranger 2.9L with manual transmission had a Mitsubishi transmission and required gear lube, not ATF.

On the Mazda trans with the "Squiggle"
the tailshaft can fail and if that space fills with "leaked" fluid and later makes a mess when you drop the t-case... So what?

It's a coffee cup worth of fluid.

Compare that to the mess of the trans running out of fluid?

"Notify you of the leak" Sorry, but I don't see you crawling under the truck
to check for leaks daily.

And if the trans is leaking out the squiggle out drips cleanly and leaves
no profound traces on any nearby parts...

Seal it and potentially save your trans.

Don't seal it and I'll tell you what I think of your "expertise" & intelligence
afterwords... I will do so in terms that you will likely find less than flattering.

You wanna vent that space? Drill a hole in the opposite side
tap it for 1/8NPT threads and screw a hose barb into it and
run a small hose somewhere high on the truck's firewall.

Making a vent in the bottom?
I'll say it to the face of the engineer(s) responsible, it's STUPID.

Vents should only let air out, not fluid.

x2!

Yes...this is the exact reason why I asked him to give us some info(and thanks OP for giving us your info). My post only talked about the mazda trans. Without knowing what he's got, I shot for the most common trans out there which happens to be what I've got and know about.

Thanks for posting up that link.

my trans has 12 oil pan bolts and is out of an 89 so im assumin its a mitsu so i need to take back the atf and get gear oil what kind?

thanks for that page exbass i have the fm146 mitsu im 99% sure. and it said on that page how much and what kind of oil. thanks!
