trans hesitating to shift to third

I just put a junkyard 2.9 into my 87 bronco ii. it runs great, but after about 35 miles of driving it started to hesitate to go into 3rd. i drove home and popped the hood and noticed the breather on the drivers side valve cover was broken. Could this big of a vacuum leak cause the hesitation? thanks.
