Well I decided to do a transmission drain/refill on my 89 today ... and i needed to show you all something.... i dont think its ever been changed in 21 years lol ... there was tons of metal flakes on the drain plug nut and looked like ... old motor oil lol here is the pic

pretty bad huh?

Doesn't look good.

Lol, at first I only saw the bottle on the left and thought "that doesn't look so bad." Then I scrolled to the right and saw the other bottle and was like :icon_surprised:.

Changing that fluid is definitely the best thing to do. Your trans will thank you. After you get the pan buttoned back up, I would do a cooler line exchange to get the rest of that nasty fluid out.

i would also do a cooler line exchange. i've seen that only once before working in a garage. not good

ok thanks for the info ...... sorry to seem retarted but, how would i do a cooler line exchange ? i never saw that in the repair manual... I would like to baby this truck as much as possible .. thanks in advance guys

If you have a 5 speed you don't have cooler lines...and since you said "drain plug nut" i'm assuming it is a 5 speed.

color of oil tranny red good.. brown propably defect or change inside part....black not good and grey is dead
---»»»tons of metal flakes on the drain plug magnet ---is ok normal
put a red line oil or amsoil mercon'V or 0w30 motor oil
