I use these: Magnefine Inline.

Change them out once per year depending on mileage. They even have a magnet to capture steel particles.

Not that I can see in 5 years of use on several vehicles. I even use them on my power steering fluid. Important to get right hose fitting. 3/8" seems to be the biggest for hose (all I've ever used) but they also come in 1/2".
