Trans adapters

The ZF is the strongest factory Ford 5 speed you will get. You will find 2 models of them a 542 and a 547, still the same transmission just the later model has updates to hold a little more power. The only one you will find useful will have a 351 infront of it. The 700R4 idea isn't all that great and aside from a stock rebuild they aren't all the cheap to modify, any overdrive isn't cheap to build up.

The wreckers all asked me if I had a Mazda trans or the ZF trans AFTER I told them it was a F150 with a 5.0Ltr. Sounds like what you guys are saying is that the ZF was only behind a 351? Will a 351 trans bolt right up to 5.0Ltr? I'm guessing it depends on what 351 - C/M/W. Fuel injected 5.8Ltr's are all the same though aren't they?

They quit making the 351M in the 80s and 351C around '74. The 351W (only of the three to receive EFI to my knowledge) lasted until '97. Any transmission that will fit behind a 5.8L ro 4.9L will work with a 5.0L, same bellhousing.

My understanding is that the 351 was only available with the ZF after 87 (as a five speed, there was probably a four speed option as well). In an F150 the 4.9 and 5.0 came with the R2 but the 5.8 used the ZF. In the F250s and F350s the 4.9 used the ZF and so did the 351.

Never mind the information below on the 460s and 7.3s, I just copied and pasted this information from another website.

So, if you wanted a ZF tranny, ask for a 351 in an F250 from 87-97.

It was behind several engine families, but the only one of use to you would be behind 351W engines (thus sharing the same bellhousing the pattern with the 302/5.0 V8 and 300/4.9 I6). So yes, a 351W trans will bolt up to a 5.0. To my knowledge they never stuck them behind 5.0's from the factory. They have a integrally cast bellhousing, much the same as the Mazda transmissions.

AWESOME! Thanks everyone for the info. I'm getting tired of changing the F150 trans - it's considerably heavier then my Ranger's. I just changed his yesterday for the second time in 2 years. Next time it's getting a ZF! Hopefully we get some gears in the diffs soon.
So has anyone put a V8 AOD auto trans behind a 4.0Ltr in a Ranger? I can't find any info on it and in all the pics I've seen of the AOD it doesn't look like it has a removable bellhousoing. So I'm guessing no.
