My automatic trans was rebuilt around 30,000 miles ago. Recently it has been doing the hard shift into drive and reverse routine. Yesterday it would not go into drive at all but would go into reverse ok. After sitting awhile it did go into drive and worked just fine. When I got it home and put it into park once again no drive reverse just fine. Tranny shop says its internal and will cost a million dollars to fix. Any suggestions? This is in a 94 ranger/ 3.0l.

If it is 4 wheel drive,

Pull the electric shift motor on txfr case and check to see where the triangular selector shaft is pointing. Anything past 12 o'clock will disengage drivetrain. Electric shift motor might be shot.

If 2 wheel drive, something broke.

Good luck

289 I think your on the wrong page.

it could be over heating, trans coolers can double the trans life.

does it go into drive only when its cold?
the only other thing i can think of is a leaking valve body gasket and or O ring.

You might be right,

However, that is the same issue I had 2 weeks ago in my 94 when my 4 x 4shift motor overshifted and failed on my 94 (no gear engagement or intermitent engagement in reverse). Hopefully he has a simple fix, (maybe low fluid) the drawback is someone has been in the trans before. The good news is he didn't say the ranger is in a puddle of ATF.

Good luck

Thanks for the input, I forgot to mention that my son and his buddy replaed the front seal a feww thousand miles ago and after that there was no overdrive at all. This is no longer my daliy driver but I would like to give rebuilding the trans a shot. Ive bent alot of wrenches under the shade tree but have never opened up a trans before, scary stuff inside there. Any hints would be appreciated. I hate when little bits go flying across the garage never to be seen again. Any special tools needed?
