tranny swap from a 1984 to 1996

Does anyone have any experience swaping a 5 speed out of a 1984 4X4 to a 5 speed out of a 1996 4X4? The only major diference I see is that the 1984 has an external slave cylinder. The 1996 tranny has an internal slave. We have it up into place, it is about 2 inches away from the engine and won't go any closer. We looked through the inspection hole and seen that the pressure plate is touching the throw out bearing. I have opened the bleeder to let preasure off but that didn't seem to work.

Any ideas or words of wisdom?

If it's not from behind a 4.0L, there is no way you'll get that onto your 1984 (assuming you have a 2.8L); it has the wrong bolt pattern. If it IS from behind a 4.0L, the starter is on the wrong side; you'll need a 4.0L starter, flywheel and clutch.

And I'm a bit surprised that slave cylinder isn't a showstopper. You've considered how you're going to connect the master, right?

Concentric slaves often need 1/2 inch or so of compression (they are always in contact with the pressure plate, unlike the external one). But two inches is not right.

I wasn't too worried about conecting the master cylinder because I was just going to use the one from the 96.

But you think I need the 4.0 clutch, flywheel, and starter. I was worried that the 4.0 clutch wouldn't work with 2.8 engine.

I do believe that the clutch is part of the problem were it is touching.

I'd suggest an early 4.0L flywheel, as there was a transition from 6 to 8 flywheel bolts at some point. I think 1996 was before that.
