Tranny shop rates

If I had a WC T5 and a Premium Master Rebuild kit to go with it, how much(average) would or should a tranny shop charge to rebuild it? I was thinkin' about $300 or so, but I have no idea.

The tranny shop here in town charged 1200.00 to rebuild a t-5. That was parts and labor.
This was also about 4yrs. ago.

Um, so hopefully with the tranny not in the vehicle, and the rebuild kit already available, hopefully I can get around $300 just for labor 'cause thats all that they need.

Really the answer is...it depends. Around here you'll get a ballpark of $300-500 as long as nothing else needs done aside from what is in the kit.

I bought the T5 off ebay and the seller said that the 3rd gear syncro is shot, so there are probably more worn out parts than he is letting on. So, I bought a premium master rebuild kit(has everything except the kitchen sink) just to say that the tranny is 100% rebuilt. The shop I talked to said that they might not even use the kit I bought.

Well, they better use it. I ain't payin' anything over $500 on this tranny.

Why don't shops just give you a straight answer on ballpark for labor? They make everything so difficult.

Can I ? Have you considered tackling this job yourself? You might need a book and have to buy some tools. -Could it cost you more than $250 - $500? Do you doubt your own abilities?
(That's about the closest I can come to a cheerleader smilie.)

What's the absolute worst that could happen? You take a basket case to the tranny shop - they try to snicker, "told ya' so". But, now they can't lie to ya' and tell ya' that this-or-that's bad, too. You would have already seen it, bought the part, and avoided their parts price markup.

If they don't use the parts you take to 'em, you can bet - they're shelfing it and charging their markup on the next one they rebuild. For parts that they didn't even pay for! And you got to pay twice!

You've got the tranny and the parts. D-I-Y!
The only way I'd advise different is if it was an automatic.

Ditto Wade's advice: you already have the trans out of the vehicle, plus the kit. For the cost of snap-pliers, other tools etc plus your time, have you considered doing it yourself?

I've seen a T-5 rebuilding DVD out there somewhere.

They also may be nervous about what kind of kit you have and if they will have to warrentee the labor on a cheap kit that also may or may not even be complete.

Not saying anything but they may have been burned before.

Hay Iron Ranger, do you ever make it down to the twin cities? If you do I've got a guy down here that is a wiz and very reasonable. He turned by c-5 in a c-4 including the bell and all the wear parts from jegs. Very heavy duty and all for $700.

On a side note I had a blast at the Gilbert OHV park watching the mud runs last weekend.

The only thing that I'm worried about is we are very mechanically inclined, but have never tackled a tranny before. My brother wants a shot at rebuilding it. To do that, I need to buy an H-frame press, manual, and the tools. Might just have to go that route.

I got my 20 ton H-frame press for $100 in slightly used condition. All they are is a bunch of steel with a bottle jack attached to it, so maybe you could even fab one up? Either way the $100 that I paid for my press has more than paid for itself and I haven't even had the thing for 2 years yet. As for rebuilding the tranny yourself, you have to weigh how much you trust your mechanical abilities against how much you trust the shop that will be doing the job. I know for sure that if I paid a shop in my area to rebuild a transmission I would still be tempted to partially tear it apart to make sure that they actually did the job instead of just replacing the parts that HAD to be replaced and not touching anything else. If you do it yourself then you know you're not getting ripped off.
