i have a 1988 ranger 4x4 when i bought it it had a 4 speed tranny in it and im now swapping it out for a 5 speed. got tired of 8 miles to the gallon. well when i got to taking out the 4 speed i found that it had an external slave cylender and would like to put that onto the 5 speed. what i need to know ultimately is how much work is it to change the bell housings and will they interchange. i have no clue what the 4 speed is model wise. but the 5 speed is a direct fit replacement from a 4x4 bronco ll. thanks to all for any input

I'd guess you have a TK4. If you find a TK5 it is pretty much a direct swap. If you come up with an FM then there may be other modifications needed to make it work, if you find an M5OD, no go Joe.

There may be trans and drive shaft length issues to consider as well, so measure your transmissions before you start.

right now the truck is sitting still clutch went out and i have another ride to drive till i fix it the plan now is to pull everything apart and see what i can do
