Can someone ID this noise? It's loudest in 2nd, but also noticeable in 5th. It changes with temperature, too. Yesterday it was about 65 outside and the noise was basically gone. When this video was taken it was about 40.

You can hear the noise from 11-17 seconds in the video, while I'm in 2nd gear, then again at 38 seconds when going into 5th.

Thanks!

My best advice is to drain the old ATF and put in synthetic ATF.

My second best advice is to make sure to remove the FILLER cap before you drain the old ATF out. That ensures you can refill it easily AND lets you check to see if it was low.

If you find it was low on ATF, you may need to pull the driveshaft and replace the output shaft seal, which is dirt cheap and easy.

When it gets to the point where it whines in every gear except 4th, start looking for another/new transmission.

I did not view your video nor do I have any opinion on your pilot bearing causing the whine. My experience is if it whines in every gear except 4th,.... you already heard the rest.

FWIW, some whine is normal and to be expected, especially in the lower gears under the torque of acceleration. It's a truck.

I would absolutely try synthetic ATF before I dropped the transmission for a clutch/pilot bearing job.

38 mph seems awfully slow to even be in 5th gear. You'll get better mpg and response by staying in 4th until 50 or more.

Thanks for the advice. I did recently change to synthetic atf. It wasn't low because excess fluid came out when I removed the check bolt. The noise didn't change afterwards, though.

As for the 38 number, I was referring to the 38 second mark in the video when I shifted into 5th, not 38mph. I should have explained it better.

It's so hard to describe certain sounds, so that's why I posted the video. I hope someone has heard it before and can send me in the right direction.

Thanks.
