and i have an 89 2.9l ext cab 4x4 ranger 5spd (no idea the tranny but needs to be replaced anyways as its toast) my question is what 5spd tranny should i get to use between the 4l and bw 1354 tcase for the swap into my ranger

im just looking for a model number of what transmission i should be hunting for
from everything i can find what i should be looking for is a Mazda M50D-R1 4x4 version, can anyone confirm this for me?
any and all help is appreciated!

You did say tranny model right?

The only Transmission you should be looking for is the model you
already names, the Mazda built M5OD-R1

You specifically want the one for the 4.0 engine.
There are subtle differences besides the gear ration difference between it and the nearly identical trans for the 2.9 engine.

Identifying a 2.9/4.0 Mazda? TWO threaded mounting holes for the starter
on the DRIVERS side.
Passenger side starter is for a 2.3/2.5 4cyl,
THREE bolt holes NOT-threaded on the drivers side is for a 3.0 engine.

a 2.9 trans will have a "smooth" bellhousing rim
The nearly identical 4.0 trans has a "skeletonized" bellhousing rim
(the outside diameter)

the 2.9 trans will have an engineering number that starts "E8" or "F0"

you basically don't want a mazda transmission that doesn't have
a part number that DOES NOT start with an "F2" or higher number.

the "F2" gearbox has the more reliable "Coarse spline" 5th-Reverse synchro
and the "improved" 3rd gear synchro, unless it's been rebuilt with the
uprated parts.

If you don't know what "uprated parts" to look for stick to
the F2, F3, F5, F7 etc... gearboxes.

will a mazda m5od-r1HD from a 2005 ranger work? (4l 4x4, fx4)

if it wont then ill be using the entire drivetrain from the 05 ranger as its been rolled
