tranny issues!

Been last few days under my ranger replacing clutch, still in reassembly mode; here's my problem. Trying to put gearshift back in, shifter is in neutral position, transmission is in gear and I have no idea what gear. I need some help here!!!

What transmission is it? If it's a manual, just center all 3 shift rails, and then you're in neutral.

Shift rails? What am I looking for/at? Internal tranny, I'm clueless!

For future reference (I'm sure now you know, but for others) always leave the shifter in neutral before yanking it out.

Thank you for the help and links! Got things corrected and good to go. Now to change out master cylinder and I should be back in business. Should be towing about 3000lb trailer Fla to Jersey in about a week. They keep telling me I can't tow that much with a four cylinder. I say why not?!

You may want to read through this before you hang 3000# on the back of that 4 banger.
