This happened today at work. I was cruising down the highway at 55 with the cruise on all was well. RPM was about 2500. All of a sudden it felt as if the transmission down shifted to abot 2000 RPM while maintaining the same speed. When I started to go down a hill regardless of the slope it increased RPM back to around 2500. The B2 has never done this since I have owned it . I thought that 2500 was normal. Until tonight. It downshifted and ran a lot easier until starting down a hill when the thing increased. On level road it ran the same It up shifted and downshifted onits own but still maintained its set speed. I turned the cruise off and it didnt change anything. It shifted as before. It would run at 2500 for a non specified time until it went up hill then down shifted. Some time a minute or just a few seconds and other times 5 miles. I increased the speed and it stayed as before. So, my question is is the tranny stuck in passing gear and thats what I have been driving in all this time or is it not shifting into drive properly? Need more questions please ask.

Any time an A4LD starts shifting differently than it has been, it's a bad thing. FYI, when a tranny shifts and the RPM's DECREASE, say 2500 to 2000 that is an UPSHIFT. When the tranny shifts and the RPM's INCREASE, say 2000 to 2500, that's a DOWNSHIFT.

Auto trannys shifting , up and down, whilst retaining the set speed is how they are supposed to work. That being said, re-read the first line in this post. A4LD=crap. Ford techs nicknamed Explorers "exploders" because of the A4LD tranny.

So, this is normal for what mine is doing? Or do I need to look for a tranny? Which one?
