Tranny issues, clutch or slave?

My truck (1988 ranger,2.9,5 spd) has been having issues lately with the tranny... I think. It is hard to get in gear sometimes, and when driving it slugs the engine down. You can feel it grabbing and releasing throughout each gear. After shifting it into gear, it'll almost die. The engine will pop on the passenger side after the bogging engine let's go.

Is this a clutch issue or slave? Or something else all together?

sounds like several problems, hard to get into gear sounds like your slave, grabbing and releasing throughout each gear, like the clutch is slipping? that sounds like the plates are worn (or the slave is not releasing fully, which is less likely) and the motor popping, do you mean back firing? that's an engine issue, not clutch related...

yeah it is grabbing and slipping while in gear so I'm definetly thinking it is clutch at this point. I have plenty of pedal and fluid pressure during bleeding so I'm thinking the slave is alright.

The motor in neutral sounds great and holds 2k rpm great 3k rpm great and up is all good and holds steady.

Transmission help please?
