Transmission
Manual
My credo
Build it, Break it, Re-build it stronger.
I have a 1990, XLT, 2wd Ford ranger, with a 2.9 V6 engine. The transmission I believe is a Mazda M5OD-R1. last night I started to smell a burning smell coming from my vents then also my RPMS started to climb higher and higher as i pressed the gas but the truck did not go faster or anything, almost like it had to increase the rpm just to keep the current speed. My question is I have no idea about transmissions and what I have read has all but confused me, I am looking for some simple answers and some Ranger help. What would be the best route to take, to rebuild it, and where a good place to look for a rebuild kit? or just replace it with a new one, if so where a place to find a whole new one or does someone have a relatively new one laying around?

if it is a manual transmission then you need a clutch kit.

if it is an automatic transmission start by checking the fluid level with the engine running in park

Ohh, it a manual tranny 5 Speed. So a simple clutch kit would fix everything?

I see, So i just want to make sure that it, because I can still put it in gear and drive forward and ect...

Classic symptoms of a worn clutch (the burning smell was the clutch disc slipping).
Transmission should be fine, however it's time for a clutch job.

Hmm, thank you guys for your help, Any recommendations of what clutch kit i Should get, manufacture wise?

i have not done it but a couple of guys on here said a stock 4.0 clutch will work and is a good upgrade. search the forum or someone with experience chip in here??

i have 31x10.50 inch tires, so I guess I would need a clutch that can take the extra strain of turning the tires also, with the 4.0 tho I believe i would have to change my starter? I have Mazda transmission.

You can bet the flywheel is probably shot also you may as well plan on replacing it while you have it apart. The rear main seal on the engine is right there also. You dont want to go back there any time soon may as well do it right.

So new fly well and clutch kit? Or are you also saying go ahead and just get a over haul kit for my tranny?

I was also looking at the over haul kit, how do you tell if your reverse slider has 30 or 36 teeth

Why do you think you need to overhaul the trans? It is most likely not necessary. Your clutch slipping is not damaging your transmission.

I don't know much about transmissions, so I apologize for my newbie questions lol. I did not know if that what you guys were talking about, So the best thing to do would just get a good clutch kit and a new fly wheel? And that would solve all my problems? sorry for the questions again haha.
