Tranny Fluid

Going to be changing the tranny fluid in my 1990 Ranger. It's the 2.3 I4 2wd 5 speed model. I already looked up that it has the Mazda M5OD-R1 transmission in it. I just need to know what kind of tranny fluid do i need, and how much of it?

Plain old Merc. ATF 2.75 qts. You can use Merc5 (synthetic) if you want, but it will shift harder.

Isn't that auto tranny fluid? Well if it works, it works :icon_twisted:
This kind of thinking is why I find trannys with gear oil in them all the time instead of the correct fluid.

Your power steering also has ATF in it.

a vast majority of domestic manual transmissions take some variation of atf, even the gm's take the blue "auto-trac" which is synthetic and meets the same specifications as many atf's.......

and on that note a more suprising fact is that any honda manual transmission (including pilots and isuzu rodeos) older than 2002 or so takes 10w30 motor oil

So it's pretty easy to find the drain and fill plugs (hard to miss the labels), however with the fill plug on the side of the tranny, I'm not too sure how I'll be able to fill it up. I've seen people use pumps, but I don't seem to have one. Would an auto parts store be able to loan me one? Or is there another method to filling it?

i had the same problem but my method as time consuming and frustrating as it is i just went and got a 99cent squeeze bottle and made the spout a lil bit shorther and fill that bottle up and fit it up in there and squeeze the holy **** out of it

i bought a big metal syringe that holds almost a quart of fluid from autozone, and i use it for just such things, suck some fluid up, squirt it in....repeat

I'm actually planning on replacing the shifter bushings soon. Since ill have the shifter and everything off, wouldn't I be able to pour the fluid in through the shifter hole?

I fill through the shifter hole and run a little extra fluid in both my trannys.

Kind of easy to overfill it you do it that way.

If i keep the fill hole open when filling from the top, any excess will just come out of there, right? Besides, I didnt feel like dropping the 12$ it costs for the giant syringe.

I have a pump I use for that. Have had it for years. Probably cost way less than $12 back when I bought it.
