I just got done putting a 98 5.0 in my 98 Ranger a month ago with a 4r70w tranny, anyway I smoked the tranny and was wondering what manual tranny would be the best choice with the least issues installing it. I am sick of auto transmissions and their issues with reliability, I know I will need a steering column along with the pedals and cylinder, bell housing and slave, how about a T5 out of a S10? Maybe a F150 tranny, gimme some opinions good or bad,,,Neil

Id go with a world class t-5, like out of a mustang... a s-10 tranny is weaker i believe... only problem is the t-5 shifter will sit pretty far back and might be a problem if you dont have bucket seats

one thing though, I need a 4x4 tranny I think GM was the only one to use T5's in a 4x4, could be wrong though...Neil[/I]

u will need a body lift, and run a zf5 in there, bullet proof trans, and has a wicked granny gear for the ranger

There's a 4wd version of the V8 M5ODR2 also. I see em listed on ebay all the time, just search for "Ford 5 speed" and you'll find em.

Doesnt advanced adaptors make a adaptor for a t-5 so you can use it for 4wd, but the z-f tranny's a good option too

I have to do a body lift? Why is that?

With a ZF you probably would, with the M5ODR2, it should fit without a lift.

would a T5 out of a jeep bolt up?

u couldnt pay me enough to put a jeep trans in a ranger.....they have enough issues with reliabilty in heeps.....

ur bes options have already been layed out for u, and the reason for the ZF needing a body lift, its for the fact u will need it physically to clear the trans in the tunnel....

thanks for the info. Maybe I should just put a C6 in it, I wouldn't have OD but it would never break either. It seems finding a good manual on a budget is as hard as finding a good 4r70w on a budget... more to come...Neil

The Ford T-5 Advance Adapter kit has not been available for several years now. They did use the Jeep tail shaft housing. Going with a manual in a 4x4 means having to use something from an F-150/250. A lot depends on your power level and intended use. The ZF has a first gear of around 5.13 which would make it a great rock climber, other than that, It would act like a normal 4 speed w/od.
