I am picking up a very old flatbed trailer this coming weekend and have been thinking about rebuilding it instead of just scrapping it. The frame is solid, at least from what I can remember, but it's just really old and has what I think are trailer house axles under it with what looked like old school military tires. Dunno what size.

I guess my question is... if the frame is solid enough to use, what is a good choice for replacement axles? I would like to be able to haul a vehicle on it. Is another set of trailer house axles a good choice, or should I just buy trailer axles? I am trying to keep this fairly low budget but it needs to be solid and safe, and cheap/easy to find tires would be nice too.

Mobile home axles are NOT a good choice. They are not meant for extended periods of use. They are meant to get the trailer to were it is going and then be tossed in the trash.

Plus most of the rims and tires are stamped 'Mobile Home Use Only'.

Not sure if Harbor Freight sells complete axle assemblies with brakes and everything on them already ( I know the Canadian version, Princess Auto does) but they seems to be pretty well priced.

We have a flatbed trailer with trailerhouse axles on it. They work fine for what we do (haul junk and hay on it short distances) but the 14.5 tires that it has are hard to find and pricy new.

This is kind of what I figured... there is just so much conflicting information. I know a lot of people use them but I guess I should just save up. The more I think about it, I'd rather be able to buy a tire at TSC instead of scavenging under a house.

What weight rating should I be looking at for axles? Not trying to haul anything huge, maybe an F150 or a big car at most.

2500-3000lbs axles with electric brakes for stuff that size.
