Trading RT/S for Rover RVXT Comments ??

RT/S's are crap and anything else is better.

Dunlop Rover RVXT

and another of the same tire:

I think one of the reasons the the RT/S tires generally have poor traction is the outer row of lugs is closed in, it doesn't allow snow, mud, sand, water to get channeled away from the tire. I always look for tires that have open outer lugs, such as the RVXTs have.

Anything is better then the RT/S. Looking on tirerack the Dunlops are getting decent reviews.

I like the look of the Bridgestone Revo2s if you're looking for a mild All-Terrain like you are.

They get EXCELLENT reviews for all weather conditions.

I had those on my previous Sport Trac and thought they were fantastic. Downside, they wear out kinda fast. Other dudes on the Sport Trac site have said if you get the LT-rated REVO's they last longer than the P-rated ones that I had, but then the LT's cost more too.

good thing though is they should have a nice mile warranty so you could get prorated on a new set of tires

We've got the RVXT rovers on my wife's '00 Xterra. Overall, I'd say they are pretty decent, especially for the price. They handle quite well on-road and are very quiet and smooth-riding.

Off-road, they do great in the dirt and sand. The lugs are spaced out enough to give a sure-footed feel on dry, loose surfaces, but close enough together to pick up lots of pebbles and small rocks. They don't self-clean all that well and are definitely NOT a mud tire. In 4lo and with lots of throttle you can still get through some of the goop just fine, but if I needed a tire to get me through some treacherous slop (like we get in the mountains around here in the spring) I would have gotten a different tire.

For a vehicle that gets driven primarily on road but still sees dirt-duty from time to time, I'd say they are a good deal. Just my $.02, best of luck with whatever you choose.

For MikeInID... Thanks for your info. How many miles on your RVXT's & how are they wearing. How did they do in the snow. Are you in Idaho ?

terrible,

We've got just over 3,000 mi. on the tires so far. They are wearing great so far, very even. We should be able to get 40-50k out of the set if all goes well.

The tires got put on towards the end of spring, so we haven't had the opportunity to verify snow performance yet. Yes, I am in Idaho and have lived here in Boise for the last 6 years.

figured I would post an update on the tires as it's been a while.

They've got about 5-6,000 miles on them at this point and have seen a whole lot more off-road action than the last time I posted an update. We went on a road trip from ID through central Oregon to the coast, down to Norcal and back through crater lake and the bend/burns/ontario desert wasteland. We have been wheeling several times, both on our trip and since then around the Boise/SW Idaho area and I must say that I am more impressed with the tires now than when we first got them. Traction in wet conditions on and off the pavement has improved greatly after the uppermost layer of compound has worn off. What impresses me the most, however is traction in loose as well as hard-packed sand, dirt and gravel, wet or dry. We don't even really need to use 4-low, even on steeper climbs. There is very minimal (almost imperceptible) wear on the tires at this point-they should last a long time. The sidewalls seem nice and stiff and relatively resistant to scratches and punctures. We're definitely happy campers at this point.

terrible,

did you ever decide on what tires you were going to get? If so, how are they treating you so far?

For Mike in ID.
Good to hear from Ya. Yes I did get a set for the FX4 about 1K miles ago. What a tremendous improvement from the RT/S. I can break them loose in the rain if I really try hard, but even then, they grab & go. The RT/S just spun & went nowhere !! They feel very confident on the road, wet & dry. Very slight whine from the tread. Pleasing, actually. I would call it a quiet tire. Even the wife likes them. Now Im wishing for some snow so I really do an evaluation. Have not seen any wear yet. Cant comment about off road. I dont go there on purpose. I will also give an update when I have more info. So far very, very pleased with the RVXT.
