Hey guys, I have a lead on a 28 spline 8.8" rear axle from a '98 Ranger. I plan on swapping it with the 7.5" currently under the truck. Both axles have a 3.73:1 ratio so I'll be set their too. I want the axle for its strength and for its trac-lok, (my 7.5" is open) but with 100,000 miles on it, I think it'll be a good idea to rebuild it while its still on the bench.

My question: What tools are involved with rebuilding the Ford Trac-lok? Also, can you brief me on this task? The rear end is $60 on craigslist and I'm going to inspect it later this week for abnormal wear and such.

fro 60 bucks thats a steal.. rebuilding the track loc is cake. just get some extra clutch packs an weave them into the stock packing.. you need to pull the axle shafts an spider gears... all you really need is a hammer an d a screw driver to pry the s clip in and to put it back in.. i just rebuilt one yesterday..

It wasn't too bad when I did the one for my Explorer 8.8. My biggest snag is I had the spiders a tooth off so I couldn't get the spring back in. It looked close but it wouldn't go.

I did the alternative packing that is supposed to be tighter, I haven't got it in to test it yet though.

Glad to hear its easy! I'll do it on the bench, sandblast it and paint it real nice... maybe powdercoat if I can find an oven big enough.

I shall check out that link, and can anyone shed some light to the alternative packing? This sparked my curiousity.

The write up says to get a third set, but the clutches that came with my axle at 100k still had enough meat on it to be pretty tight with a new set mixed in.

CPPCPPC (where C is a clutch plate and P is a driven plate). To get harder lockup, change the order to CPCPCPC

Awesome, I spose I have a project on my hands now. As for swapping the 8.8" ranger axle in, thats basically a bolt in affair, right? My driveshaft should bolt right to it.

on a 1990-up an 8.8" Ranger axleis a bolt in.

There are some annoying differences with earlier Rangers.

(late in '89 ford changed the pinion companion flange diameter
and sometime around then they switched to larger diameter lower shock bolts.)
