how do you check the tps on a 86 ranger. i all ready have a volt meter just trying to figure out what setting to use, and what wires to check. and what should it be reading?

I don't know the wiring colors/configuation off hand exactly, but given you know what to look for, you should be able to figure out what's what with your volt meter. This only needs to be done with the key on Run, the engine should not be running.

The TPS plug consists of 3 wires - 5v+ constant ref., signal to ECM, and a ground. You'll want to test against the ground on the plug and not that battery for best results. Signal to the computer is usually between ~.9v+ at "idle" - ~5v+ at WOT.

The TPS is basically a variable resistor and "limits" the 5 volt ref to signal the computer where the operator is on the throttle. You want to look for a clean sweep between that range when giving it throttle, if there are any dead spots or it's not smooth or doesn't appear to be working right, the sensor is probably bad.
