Here you go.

The two you bought were they used. I don't buy used electrical sensors. For me at least they never work. Sometimes you just have to fork out the cash for new.

the ones you bought were probably universal (schrader, gator, EZ-sensor, etc.) nothing wrong with them most likely and they will probably work. some aftermarket sensors though have to be programmed to the vehicle. you do this with the sensor out of the wheel. then you have a time limit to get them into the wheel/tire combo and have air pressure measured by them and the position relearned to the vehicle. Usually like 15 minutes

i suggest taking them to your trusted auto shop b/c it takes a special tool (nothing super special bout it but expensive as hell) to program the sensors to your vehicle. on top of having to break down the tire and replace the sensors.

i would think it'd be $20-$50 to get a shop to dismount 2 tires and replace 2 sensors. remember if they are a reputable shop they will do a full relearn process, re-balance the wheels that had their tires dismounted, correct all air pressure and most likely check your brakes too.

or you could just disregard the light. cheapest option. FREE

most expensive is to have them sell you their sensors and replace the defective one. ($80-$130)

I think he was referring to Throttle Position Sensor(TPS) on an 1988 Ranger

the one at rock auto is no longer available.the universals i bought new one from rock auto and one from amazon it was supposed to be an exact factory match but didn't match when i got it.i would run a universal but there too big to bolt on to throttle body.my parts guys have never seen this issue.neither have i. no one here has never ran into this before.

I don't know if it is that uncommon, past 25 years old engine or body specific parts can be hard to find OEM new.

There are always plenty of 3rd party(universals), sometimes they fit sometimes they don't

In my car restoration days you could spend months and months tracking down an original part, and new or used you were glad to find it, lol.

Your TPS could have been specific to 1988 Ranger 2.3l or 1988 2.3l Ford.
Also check 1987.

And do you know this is the factory engine?
At 27 years old it could be from another year
2.3l got fuel injection in 1985 so that would be the first year of the TPS on 2.3l

Oh sorry I didn't see that it was discontinued.

+1 to what RonD says always. If you can check the motor number to the build plate and also check the manufacture date on the plate. If the date is passed July of the year it could possibly need the next model years part.

It's really hard to get someone to order a electrical part to just see if it's the right one. They are usually always special order that far back.

Also I had a good friend that restores cars and sometimes they find some original parts at some of the smaller dealerships around the country and they still have the parts on the shelf's. Just takes a lot of calling around.

I may have one in the basement. Post a picture or the part number.
tom

then again, I have a 1985 with EFI so may need it myself....
