So I read just about all the TPMS hits on here, saw the general consensus that:
1) external (valve stem caps) are worthless
2) stems are better than bands as far as service shops wrecking em
3) anything aftermarket 315 mhz will work
4) autel sensors are recommended 2nd behind genuine OEM
etc etc.
Well I got a question or 3 still unanswered so here they are.
The family's 2007 came with non-ranger wheels and a blinking TPMS light thanks to the P.O. (previous owner, herein after referred to as that dirty son of a bitch)
We (as in not me, but the family) want to switch to different wheels and try to get the TPMS working (without sinking a mint into the attempt). During purchase the seller offhandedly said something about $5000 digging around in the dash. My guess is it was just flippant and he was too lazy to do anything so just lived with it.
A) I already am getting forscan setup (add another key)
B) we already have wheels
I'm trying to be reasonable (cheap) on costs... very reasonable. Mainly just in case there is a very expensive part busted I haven't sunk a mint into it to find out it was all wasted.
I'm not going to pay a tire shop $500 to get the TPMS working, and a couple places both gave quotes $475-$500 (on top of tires).
Here's my plan... buy these TPMS sensors:
and one of these relearn/activation tools:
I lean towards the 4th because of reviews on 1/2/3... I'd really prefer a Ford/GM/ Honda since Honda's are so well made they are in my future I bet. (I talked my Ex into a Honda and we both loved it.)
The "fleet" includes one '18 Escape (working fine), and all older stuff w/o TPMS (though one 2007 GM should, but it does not have TPMS).
Here's what I'd like to know.
A) Any other suggestions for sensors that are better but still "cheap"
B) Any other suggestions for a activation/relearn tool that is better but still "cheap" (especially if it can do Ford/GM/Honda)
C) Any other known expected issues with a BLINKING TPMS light on the dash?
(I expect the explorer wheels currently on it have no sensors at all hence the light.)
I have tires on the "new" wheels right now, but they are just rollers - sun rotted and down to the wear bars, all DO hold air though.
