Toyota Recalls 2.3 Million Vehicles

Stupid drive-by-wire junk. I like having a physical connection to the engine.

Come to think of it, the throttle of my Ranger is drive-by-wire. It has a CABLE running from my pedal to the intake butterfly.

They're still mad over that whole atomic bomb thing........ hold a grudge, I swear!!!

I'm sorry those people died, but it's called, brakes and neutral.

I have had to physically pull the accelerator off the floor of a car before (because i rode the hell out of the brakes and stopped accelerating, and I didn't want to throw it in neutral and blow the motor)

My mom drives a toyota yaris, but she's not mechanically retarded, she grew up in the country driving and working on trucks and tractors..... if her accelerator stuck she's smart enough to not throw her hands up in the air and just die. For that I am thankfull.

Frank

May god have mercy on my soul. But how stupid do you have to be. A state trooper driving in a lexus with runaway acceleration. Slip it into neutral. It won't blow the motor. As a last resort turn the key off.

that would be the first thing i do after the brakes didnt work...cut it off!!!

thats another reason im gonna stick to rangers even if i cant get a new one cuz they drop em, hell im pretty sure i wont run out of rangers down here, and besides they live long so mine is gonna be here for a while lol.

funny post, but the subject isnt that funny at all.
remember that camrys and lexus are driven by old people, some dont even realize or sense the speed they driving at. not to mention the reflexes and quick response u need to control-or try to control a situation like that.
ive had sticked accelerators a few times, mostly by floor mats, and this time wearing wolverine boots, i tried to brake in a hurry and i was braking and gassing at the same time cuz the shoe sole is way too wide.
by the moment i felt it wasnt stopping, looked the rpm's going up and felt and heard the engine acelerating i kicked in neutral.

I had to stop cars with the hand brake too, but like i said its a matter of the response u have to a given situation.
people should know what to do in those situations tho...

That style car does not have a ignition it has a push button start. You need to hold it for 3-5 seconds to shut the car off and brother n law told the 911 operater that the car would not turn off even though the driver had his finger on it.

Now that sounds like a really stupid design flaw. But yeah, neutral FTW. The engine isn't going to blow. That's what a rev limiter is there for. Besides, life > engine. Toyota needs to go back to the drawing board on the logic in the computer of that car when it comes to that push button ignition. At least they will take responsibility for their faults, unlike one of the big 3.. *cough*Chrysler*cough*

the honda s2000 has the same start type, many vehicles have it, and many vehicles have electronic accelerator, even nissan sentras have it(sentra se-r spec v)
and seems that it doesnt fail on them, sentra owners do take it out tho, they install the cable from the older altima, but thats just cuz they use em for racing and they claim a cable is better.
seems like yota tried to look at this as a minor issue, but it isnt.

good theyre stepping up on the rsponsability
any way... in your face toyota!!!! your shit isnt that perfect and reliable!!! :thefinger:

While I agree that every driver should know that you should simply shift into neutral in a situation like that, keep in mind that it was a loaner car that the driver was probably not familiar with, and the gear shifter looked like this:

Good luck figuring that thing out while your hurtling down the road at 120 mph.

A lot of the pushrod guys on 60v6 buy new used 3500 v6's (with less than 30k miles for $500 or less) and they come with drive by wire. I don't know one person who has kept the drive by wire throttle body. My friend has an online aftermarket parts store for these engines/cars and he's always selling out of the adapter plate he sells to bolt a cable TB onto the intake for a drive by wire car.

It goes back towards park the opposite way you put it in drive. My friends dads new G6 GT convertible has a shifter like that and it really isn't any harder to work than a standard automatic selector, especially since 95% of the people who drive them probably never put it in "Manu-matic" mode and leave it in D.

yeah ive known people that have cars with that type of trans and they never had used it.
a good safety device for those fancy intelligent rides would be that when u press the brake with a determined pressure and for a determined time the ecu automatically start down grading the trans and releasing the gas, even if the gas is at full throttle.
some european cars trigger the hazzard lights automatically when full braking.

got what i mean? like a panic stop procedure. it can be done, stability and traction controls work in a similar way by retarding ignition and slowing rpms to retake wheel control.
with the amounts of cash people pays for those death traps this would be a must- considering how easily they can catch speed and the type of people driving em
