Anybody thought or actually put a Toyota 22r engine in a ranger?

with as dependable as those engines are I could see why but with that dependability comes the 105hp and 137lb-ft of torque

Oh boy. Like it or not that 22R was major power potential. I would just get a nice older Toyota truck though since the rest of the driveline and the suspension also share the same reliability. I had one I bought for 300 bucks with 225k on it it. I beat that thing silly as a trail and field truck for years. I sold it for 500 and it is still being driven as a winter truck by my friend Bob. 275k on it now.

ok....

but a ranger with a 2.3 is equally reliable, underpowered, and also has major power potential (EG. over 300WHP on the stock reciprocating assembly)....and that engines already in the truck.

the 22r is a good motor, it just doesnt offer anything that the ranger doesnt already have.

i guess if you wanted it for pure uniqueness, then go for it. but theres no other way to justify this swap.

It's a good engine, but there are plenty of options that are easier/cheaper to adapt that offer similar reliability. It's not like the stock 2.3, 3.0, and 4.0 engines were particularly unreliable either.

Underpowered 4banger with a carb :bad:

Prettymuch. A friend of mine has an 87 4Runner with 4.56s and 31s and he whines all day long about how the RV cam wasn't enough, and how he needs a header, and bla bla bla.....

Another friend has a 95 Yota single cab with stock 4.10s and 31s and the motor he has came from a Yota freak who claimed 250 hp when he had it a carbed set up on it with 48mm venturis. :shok: He put his EFI stuff on it, and he runs around all day at like 4k RPM like a tard since it can spin way past the fuel cut off point. I can still beat him up hills with my heavy Supercab with a weak 2.9, 3.73s and 31s.

Yeah..it'd be unique...but I like the 4.0 swap better.

The 22r is a good motor..for Toytas.
