Toyo Koygo 2wd interchangeble with 4wd?

Hi,

ive got a 87 ranger 2.9 2wd and my transmission is going out. i was just wondering if anyone knows if i can just buy a 4x4 and switch out the back part. the only reason im considering this is because i can get a bunch of 4x4 transmissions for cheap and there are no 2wd's around.

I have had the opposite problem - but for a different year model.

The chances of being able to swap out are not good. Usually the transmission is a different length when you have a 4X4. That means you have to get new driveshafts. If you are trying to remove the 4wd transfer case and put a 2wd tailstock on the tranny, I have been told that the shaft is a different length, so you have to crack open the tranny and change out the shaft internally. Heck, you might as well rebuild the one you've got.

I am relatively new to these problems, but I have had to learn fast. Don't take my word for anything. Ask around with some of the more experienced people, but what I hear is that you are in for a headache.

Alright i see what your saying. This is kind of why i posted it on therangerstation because i figured that maybe someone here knows if thats possible or not. whell im sure its possible but, i dont know how hard it would be to change. i was thinking even it would be easier to just take the whole 2wd tranny out and just put a 4wd tranny with a transfer case and driveshaft. but then id just leave the front driveshaft out. I was planning on putting a solid front axle in anyways but at the moment im kind of short on money so that would have to be sometime later on haha.
