ok, well.. its been raining here quit a bit lately, so i found a little mud hole off the side of the road. maybe a foot or two deep water, noting to be scared of and pushed the truck through it, well, once i got out my engine felt like it had lost all HP and the engine light came on, and even with it in 1st gear and foot to the floor it wouldent go over like 5mph:beer::beer::beer:, i shut it off in a parking lot and waited about ten minutes then started it up and it ran ok, not great, but today it ran perfect again, dont have a code reader but was wondering if any of you have had this problem before?, i dont think the intake sucked water in or anything...

my old 4.0 exploder did the same thing, found out my coil pack didnt like breaing wet. when mine got wet it would missfire, check engine light came on,wouldnt go past 2500 till it was dry

check your air box, i bet it will have goo in it:D my exploders was covered:icon_twisted:

well i have an msd coil pack, same TDI? (forgot if its the right word for it lol) stock style though. i remember it happning once before and i couldent figure it out, makes me nuvirous to water log my truck anymore. and yeah i checked the airbox and it looked clean

just b careful lol, my air box had a air inlet in the bottom and that would suck mud and water in

tough gig maybe others have solved this issue. ill check back tommrow n see where this thread goes, but for now its bed for me ahaha

so anyone have a solution to this problem? maybe a cowel intake? not realy wanting to cut a hole through the quarter panel to do a snorkel, i think they look kinda fugly

I doubt it was water in your intake at all.

I'd say you got your coil wet.
my 88 got wet once upon a time (I ran it into a creek, submerged the engine) all but the breather. pulled the truck home with my dad's F-250..... washed it ( raked over the mud to hide evidence in yard ) and when he got home said it wouldn't start... he walked over, fired right up, never hiccupped again. It was definately a water and wire issue with me that go-round.

ok, rephrase of question, anyone solve this wire/coil getting wet issue before, i really do like takin my truck through the water and its quite a joy except when this happens, haha

well i searched this problem and one guy said its the MAF getting wet/ filter wet restricting flow.... this makes allot more sence to me, i probably missed something because i do know ive pressure washed my engine while it was running and when the coil got wet nothing happend, ill try relocating to a cowel snorkle i think and try it again.

Older wires can lose their seal on the coil pack towers and the plug ceramics. You may think about replacing with good quality wires.
Other than that, silicone or dielectric grease the hell out of all connections, including the control wires going into the coil. Dielectric on the inside, silicone (usually messy) on the outside.
The swamp buggy racers use dielectric grease inside the connections, and silicone on the outside. Their engines and the truck get submerged and still run well. :icon_thumby:

well i recently replaced the plug wires and stuff so there all new aftermarkets ignition parts and wires . i do have some dilectric though , ill give that a go and work on the cowel intake and see what kinda damage i can do.
