I have a Torsen Loc diff from a Fx4. And my question is how "limited" is the limited slip? I know the old traclok I had was worthless. I DD my truck and hit trails on the weekend, but I rarely lift a rear tire. I have a Detroit lunchbox locker, and a Torsen loc sitting in the shop, and Im not sure which to go with. I was thinking Torsen for the sake of my tires but Id like to have the full lock.

I DD the shit out of my lunchbox locker (lockright) and NEVER had a problem. Im the same, DD and weekend warrior. If I were you Id go lunchbox....

Unless I can figure out what is wrong with my locker I may have no choice. I have a growing suspicion that my locker problem has something to do with the cross pin. Does anybody know if the 31 spline axles ever came with the 3/4" cross pin? As far as I know they all came with the 7/8" pin and thats what my locker is designed to work with, but it acts like the pin is too small and allows the locker to ratchet when it shouldnt. I am going to check it out when I get home this weekend. I am certain the open carrier I pulled had 31 spline side gears. I pulled the side gear thrust washers from a different carrier, is it possible they are thinner than the ones that were in my carrier before? I would think Ford would have various thicknesses of washers to shim up any inconsistencies in the carrier housing, but I dont know.

Not sure how to fix the problem your having with your locker, but I can tell that if you do any wheeling at all you will love the Detroit and hate the limited slip.

There is really no comparison to the two. I drive 58 miles every day with a Powertrax No-slip in my Ford 8.8. I have over 30K on mine now and it has been awesome everyday of that. And I drive every type of terrain. Snow, rocks, gravel, dirt sand, dry/wet asphalt etc you get the picture. A locker won't let you down ever, whereas a limited slip will get you through more stuff than an open diff, but it won't get you through it all.

And tire wear is minimal or negligible altogether.

I have an 03 fx4 levelII with 97k on it and i have noticed the torsion lock i believe is shot. I really notice it in the winter. I remember with my 94 with just a factory rear lock that i did much better in 2wd then with my 03. I have been thinking about a locker for the rear for some time now and was just wondering will i have to get an open case for a locker? All the lockers i have looked at said it will not work with a LS case.

Torsion carrier is completley different than even a factory limited slip carrier (which I think you can still get a lunchbox for)

Most options for a lunchbox locker would be with a open 31 spline carrier though.

Don't forget, unlike most Rangers you need the 31 spline stuff for like an Explorer or fullsize.

I realize i have the 31 spline, so pretty much i would be better off trying to find an exploder open rear end and just doing the swap that way. If i did it that way i would have the option of adding what ever locker i wanted and not be limited. Or would i just have to buy the center chunk and swap that. What would i need to get rid of the torsion LS and add a locker?

I thought that you had to have an open carrier to install a locker. The LS carrier wont work. But I have never installed one so i may be wrong.

That is what i was thinking!! So i would have to get an open carrier and swap it to be able to put any kind of locker in correct.

If you get a full carrier locker (like a detroit) it doesn't matter what carrier you have now.

I don't mean to thread jack, but does the Summit Racing lockers allow the wheels to spin at different speeds when on a dry road ????

All lockers unlock, either automatically or manually, if it doesn't unlock, it's not a locker, it's a spool.
