I have an scrap 2008 FX4 and was wondering if it would be a good idea to put the Torsen (and maybe the 4:10 gears?) in my 2008 XL 2.3L 2wd.

hell yea! just swap the whole axle assembly out

Wanna sell the skidplates off it? I need the gas tank and diff skids...

No question that I'd jump on the whole axle swap. Seen them going for about $1000 down here and that was 400 miles away. Do it!

You will have to swap the whole rear end. The FX4 has an 8.8" axle and your 4-banger has a 7.5" axle. The 8.8 diff and gears will not fit your axle.

Are you sure that 2008 FX4 has a Torsen? The FX4 did not come with it unless installed as an option. I am not even sure the 08 FX4 Level 2 came standard with the Torsen. I know the earlier Level 2 came standard with it but at some point it became an option.

I'm pretty sure the FX4 package came with a torsen, every one I've ever heard of has one.

So they're going for $1000??? How much has anyone else seen these things go for?

As a rule, the FX4 package includes a Torsen diff & 31 spline axles.

all the Fx4's on the lot down here has the torsions, and so do the Sport packages.

Even if it is open, it is a better axle than you have now... and I doubt it is open.

All 4WD Rangers after 98 and 2WD Edge and Sport have torsion bars but that is not what we are talking about.

The Torsen differential came stock only on the 02 FX4 and 03+ FX4 Level 2. Yes, it came with a 31 spline axle. That was not standard on the 03+ FX4 unless it was a level 2. I am not sure it was even a factory option until around 07 or 08.

Look on the tag if it says 4L10 than it has 4.10's and the torsen unless it was recalled and the dealership cheaped out and put an old open diff in there.

4L10 just means it is a limited slip with 4.10 gears. That could also be a clutch type limited slip differential. I don't know if there are any other numbers that indicate if it is a Torsen. However, if it is a Torsen it should have another tag on it that says "140W synthetic only".
