Torque converter

I have an 86 ext ranger. I am thinking that I have an issue with the torque converter. I don't know much about automatic transmissions. When I drive down that road I have a hesatation like the trans is letting on and off. How do I tell if I have 1; a bad torque converter, 2; a shift module, 3; something that I am not listing?
