So im in the middle of a 4.0 swap on my 1990 BII. When I pulled the engine from the explorer the torque converter stayed on the back of the engine instead of coming off with the trany. All the fluid in the T.C. has leaked out. Im about to put the engine into my bronco and need to know if I need to take the T.C. off the engine and fill it with fluid and reinstall in on the tranny first or just put it all back together and fill it once its in...any thoughts here?

Pour some fluid in it. The torque always gets installed into the trans first, and make sure to rotate it until it full seats into the pump. Then install your engine, line up the flex plate and bolt it up.

So should it just slide off of the back of the engine?

Did you take the nuts off of the torque converter that hold it to the flex plate?

No, like I said when I pulled the engine it came off with it. so If its bolted to the flexplate how do you get the bolts back on once you put it on the tranny?

Through the starter mounting hole. Put a 22mm socket on the crankshaft bolt and turn the engine over clockwise with a breaker bar as viewed from the front to get to each nut.

The converter always stays with the transmission.

Sweet. Thanks, is there any specific pattern that the TC is supposed to be bolted to the flexplate? Or do all the holes line up? So for future reference it sounds like I should be doing this first before I pull the engine.

Another thing you need to do is replace the front seal for the transmission as you more than likely destroyed it when you pulled the T/C out of the trans.

All the holes will line up. There is no specific way that they go back.

I'll look into that. It doesn't seem to be leaking. It's not like I had to pry it apart or anything they just seperated.
