I have the o/d light flashing and took the ranger to Aamco today to get it checked out. waited 3 hours for them to tell me two codes were read, one was a solenoid and the other was something about the torque converter? I know it has hard shifting and I'm thinking its the separator plate/ bad valve body gasket , but they wouldn't tell me the exact codes and told me i needed the trans rebuilt and it would cost $1800. I told them at that price and they didn't know what exactly was the problem still, I'm not going to have them work on the truck and waste my money if its just something moderate to fix which if its the valve body gasket, I can do it myself, but does anybody know what he was talking about the torque converter showing a code ? or could it be something close that i misheard ? any suggestions ? i don't want to waste my time doing the valve body gasket only to find out it didn't correct the problem.

if you paid for a diag. by law they have to tell you. and a bad solenoid does NOT warrent a full rebuild.

I didn't pay though, they do a free transcan and checked the line pressure to make sure the pump was good, that's what i figured, it shouldn't need a whole trans rebuild, specially since they said if they open the trans just to see whats wrong they're gona have to do a rebuild, and the 1800 is just for a basic rebuild with the kit, so if something is messed up then its extra.

What could they have been talking about a torque converter code though ? cause I could swear that was the other code he told me that was showing

The TC dont have any codes, but the TCC solenoid can have fault or performance codes indacating a clogged solenoid or bad clutches in the TC.

So how can i find out if the solenoid is messed up ? just have to drop the pan and look ? or do i need to have a scanner tell me which one it is ?

you need to use a scanner, it would tell you what solenoids are acting up or clogged. there are 5 solenoids- TCC, Pressure controller, shift A, B, C.

and from the outside you wouldent know if there bad.

and let me guess, it has to be a special scanner just for transmissions right ?

I have a basic mac tools scanner the 100 dollar one that didnt pull up the codes tho

was your check engine light still on? most code readers dont have a history access point.

you would need a scanner(live data accusition)
you have a code reader.

So viper command, i had a friend with a scanner check it, and it pulled up code B1342 faulty control module for the 4 wheel drive, but it was scanned after it was sitting and the od light wasn't blinking, he said he had a problem once where it was the actual od button switch, and i told him how the wires frayed some on mine and i just wraped electrical tape and it fixed the problem, but he still thinks for now its the switch, and hes going to look it up at his job tomoro. Do you think that could be it ? or did it not pull any codes because the trans codes dont get stored to memory and thats why the light only comes on after driving it for a few mins ?

it doesn't seem like it launches better but it def shifts harder once the light starts flashing, it almost feels like im driving a manual and not the best at shifting and giving it gas but letting off the clutch late, kinda like that lil jump you get

when your OD light is flashing the trans goes into safe mode and bumps up the line pressure. thats why it shifts hard.

you might need a freshning, soft rebuild.
