So my ranger has a 4.0 v6 and Auto from a 95 ranger. It has 33's and 5.86 gears and at 70 mph the speedo says 105 and cuts the fuel. I am going to get a Programmer to remove the governor eventually but is there any temporary solution to remove the governor that wont effect anything else?

what year is the ranger? some speedos you can change the speedo gear on some of the older rangers i think i know my 03 has to be changed with a programmer

Yeah the problem is that your truck thinks its going 105 where it cuts out so either it has the gear in the T case or it has a sensor in the rear end.

You'll need to get a new gear if you have the gear and get it re programmed to the new gears and tire size if its got the sensor.

Are you still using the instrument cluster from when you had your 2.3? If so you need to change it to one that has a 4.0 in it.

How would this help?

Its 2wd and the Trans is from a 95 OBDII. I swapped it into a 97 ranger. It has a 9" with no sensors.

They its probably a gear on the tail section of the trasmission on the drivers side. I believe there is a calculator for figuring out which one you need in the tech library.

Whats trans is it though?

Yeah it looks like it has the gear, I'll look in the tech section thank you.

On the 89-94 dash there is a small square shaped chip on the back of the cluster. I understand if you run a 4cyl cluster with a 6cyl engine or vice versa you need to swap that chip out. I am not 100% sure if its the same way on the 95+, but its worth swapping out the cluster to see if that cures your problem. Did that green Ranger with the 4.0 have the cluster in it?

Has it been off like that since you put the 4.0 in your truck?

Yeah it has and it's really annoying lol

The 95 is electronic, it is controlled by a ground wire in one of two positions or not hooked at all for 4, 6, or 8 cyl applications....

You will have a VSS (vehicle speed sensor) where the speedo normally goes into the trans, only it will not have the speedo cable, just a plug with wires, remove the bolt, and remove the speedo head, pull the E-clip and change the speedo gear to compensate. But save the old one, and when you get a programmer, swap it back. A tuner will help you in more ways than just recalibrating the speedo, so make that your next investment!!

FYI: That chip is for the tach, The speedo on the 89-94 is mechanical.

Yes I know the speedo cable is mechanical, but the chip is to assure all the gauges are working properly. Its not just for the tach if so, how do you explain the clusters without a tach? Those have the chips on them also.

It is also used by the gas gauge to slow the reaction time. That stops it from bouncing when the fuel sloshes around.

But the speedo is a cable and gears. The only power that gets anywhere near the speedo is for the lightbulb. If you know the speedo is mechanical, then you should know that chip has no effect on it.

Back to the OP's original question....

You can interrupt the VSS signal in to the PCM to get rid of your speed limiter.

On your 97, that wiring is either from the VSS mounted in tandem with the speedo cable or a stand alone VSS on top of the rear axle. I believe yours will be on the trans end of the speedometer cable. The speed sensor will have two wires. Simply wire a switch into either one of those wires and enjoy unlimited WOT top speed.

I assume the OP is racing. Here are links:

Thanks for all the infoo guys! Ill disconect that sensor prob untill I get a programmer.
