This is the third time I've removed my tranny in as many months. Being a backyard mech to save time I put together a list of the required tools. Its probably not a complete list. Its not in any order of use. I'm sure you'll need other tools. I have an 87 ext cab 4x4 with 2.9 engine and the current trans is an FM145.

Drip Pan, Drop Lights, Transmission Jack, Bottle Jack, Floor Jack, Fluid Pump, Jack Stands x4, Torque Wrench and some wood blocks.

1. Battery terminals- 1/2" wrench
2. Starter wire- 3/8" socket
3. Starter bolts- 17mm wrench and socket
4. Shifter bolts- 10mm socket w/extension
5. Drive shaft to transfer case- 13mm socket w/breaker bar
6. Carrier bearing (split drive shaft)- 1/2" wrench on the bolthead and
15mm socket w/breaker bar on the nut

7. Speedometer cable- 7/16" socket w/extension
8. Transfer case drain plug- 3/8" breaker bar
9. Transfer case skidplate- 10mm socket
10. Transmission drain plug- 15/16" socket
11. Larger transfer case linkage bolt- 1 1/8" wrench
12. Transfer shifter linkage- 15mm bolthead and 13mm for the nut
13. Transfer case bolts- 15mm wrench and socket
14. Bellhousing to engine- 1/2" wrench and socket w/long extension, swivel and breaker bar

15. Front driveshaft- T30 torx head
16. Transmission mounts- 18mm deepwall socket
17. Transmission crossmember- 15mm wrench for the bolthead and
18mm deepwall socket w/breaker bar for the nut

18. Slave cyl fluid input line retaining clip/pin- needle nose pliers
19. Fluid line from the master cyl to the slave cyl- short section of crimped plastic hose (to reduce fluid leaking and air into the master cylinder)

I hope this helps

Good list for somebody fixin to do their first Transmission. It would suck to have most of it out then find out that you need a torx socket to finish the job.

My ranger have a few different sizes here or there. still a great list of tools
