Todays weather

I used to have a light fixture mounted under the hood with a regular 75W bulb that I would plug in when it got really cold, havent had that setup in a long time, A regular block heater would be a good thing to have. When I went to leave work it didn’t want to fire on all 4 at first but after about a minute it settled down & smoothed out. I used to have the same issue if it sat for a couple of weeks without being started no matter what the weather.
I'm not sure I can get incandescent bulbs anymore.

I used that method when I still had the '82 Toyota Celica, The fuel filter was mounted on the firewall in the engine bay. So I would lay the drop light real close to that. I had an episode before that where I think the fuel line froze up from some poor quality gas. I never had an issue after that.

They are getting harder and harder to find.
If you wander around the walmart aisles that have tools and oil and other goofy stuff, you may run across one that has lots of lighting mechanisms.
IF, while you are there, pay particular attention to the Bottom shelf. The Bottom shelf is where I have found most of the bulbs that are rapidly receding from our midst.
You can most easily recognize these jewels by the Yellow (clearance) tags they have been given.
I thankfully have a couple of them protecting my well house through these frigid temperatures

We did that at the farm for years, 2 bulbs in the well pit.

Got 4 to 4.5" of snow last night. First snow in a couple years. Mid 20s so not so cold. They claim we'll see low teens for the next couple nights. Apparently around here that's "bitter cold". I'm not from around here. Guess I'll have to wear a light jacket... I miss ice fishing.

I was stuck in a blizzard 6 weeks to the day. 300 miles from "home". I had been working in the black hills at the Homestake Gold Mine. A buddy talked me into going up to their families home town on the Standing Rock Reservation on a 3 day weekend. The first day was nice but that night it started snowing, and by morning it was blizzard conditions, and most of the 300 miles of roads we had used to get there were closed.
They had two brothers living in town and we bounced back and forth the next 6 weeks, until they got most of the roads we needed open again.
It was an experience, not a great one but whatever, I got out one morning in 35 below temps and about that much wind, dressed in double insulated overalls and anything else I could fit, and walked around about 30 minutes. That was the high point of my trip.
Got back to the black hills and my job was gone, since I was new there was no reprieve, so after a few days there I put my stuff on a bus to OKC, and bought a ticket to Rapid City. I got off the bus about 10 PM about ten miles from town, and stuck my thumb out on the interstate, Less than an hour a Semi Truck came rolling up and gave me a lift. They had passed me the first time, turned it around at the next exit, went 8 or 10 miles past me again, came back and picked me up.
Then came 18 hours of high speed traveling, that was the biggest break I had had.. I made it to KC alright but then it was getting dark, and the next 14 hours were some of the longest, but I got into Chickasha around noon on the 3rd day. Said I'd never gripe about the Texas/Oklahoma heat again.
Well, almost 40 years later we had the hottest heat wave I had ever seen, more temps above 110F than I could count, but I marked them on the calender, many were 112, 113, 114, 115, numbers of each, and several 116,17. and 18.
All I had was a fan in an open window, watching those days go by, and how many times did I gripe?
Not One Time! ;)

It hasn't really been cold this winter, last night it was 11 and that might be our coldest yet. It's been snowing light, fluffy stuff all day but we've only got a few inches.
One year in the early 80's we never got up to zero the whole month of January and we'd work until 10 or 11 every night trying to get all the tow ins running.
We used to see -30 to -35 every winter with the last week of January and first week of February being the worst, last year we didn't even see -20 and I didn't mind a bit. It doesn't matter what the thermometer says, if you walk outside and the snow squeaks, it's friggin' cold.

It seems like every winter, people complain more and more about the cold. They say things like “this is the coldest ever.” Or “it’s never been this cold.” When, in reality, it was colder and nastier just a few years prior. Do people really have such short memories? Or is it just some innate need to exaggerate and make wild claims to sound like we have it worse than anyone else? Are people just getting extremely wimpy? I don’t understand it. Weather conditions have been recorded for many years. It can be verified whether this is really “the coldest ever”, at least in recorded history.

We got a surprise dump of snow last night. So, I had to hurry up and clean the front walk and entrance to the driveway. With it being as cold as it is, it was light and fluffy. So easy to just clear with a shovel. One of the few times I didn't complain too much. If it had been wet, heavy snow, the story would have been different.

It's the "goldfish memory" kicking in and people not bothering to see what past years had been like.

I remember the 1970's being pretty cold and we got a lot of snow. Ofcourse, I was only starting elementary school then. So, the snow would be a lot higher to someone 8-10 years old than to an adult. And I had to walk to and from school in it. I had boots and there were no hills.

Depends where you are, we're having a mild winter but Texas is cold and snowy because of the jet stream being influenced by la nina or el nino(sp).
And when the weatherman says "coldest/hotest in recorded history" he's saying in the last 150-200 years, that ain't even an eye blink in geological time.

76 and 77 is the winter I was in South Dakota. While I was in the Black Hills it was awesome. I'd walk to work up that long lonely hill at 5 AM and -25 and it wasn't bad at all.
It's when you start adding wind or any type of moisture it starts to get worse.
It also makes a difference how you deal with it. age can make a lot of difference there too.
Think I'd still prefer the 118 to the -18 :)
