Hey guys, I use my truck as a daily driver, weekend wheeler, and sometimes, I can take on a bit of muddy water in the intake, the air filter has blocked it as of now, but its getting annoying and worrying me. I am thinking about making one of those home-made snorkels. Before I do this, Is it going to reduce my fuel economy and is it better to use the airbox and run it from there (using the original airfilter, sealing the airbox off) OR running it directly from the intake hose through an external conical airfilter like in the picture below? I would assume i'd be best off just sealing the airbox off and running it up from there... so i dont have to make an adapter and deal with any Mass Airflow Sensor issues..?

I don't know maybe some sort of enclosure around it to keep it dry...keep the bottom open to suck fresh air...hopefully no water?

If you are getting muddy water in your airbox, that obviously answers the question "do I need a snorkel". I'd run it to the airbox. I'd probably even keep the filter element in it. Double filter is good. Both will flow more than enough air for your engine. As for rain, it would be a simple matter to build a shield for the filter on the end of the snorkel. Just find a plastic jug or a can that will fit over the conical filter and cut the back side out of it. Problem solved. Not really anything to worry about anyway. Your engine will burn what little rain water gets in.

I'm guessing there is no brush where you are. I'd tear that filter and those lights off on the first trip up here!

haha, yea, it was obvious that I needed one. I finished her up today, I just ran 2 inch pvc up from the newly SEALED airbox to the cowl, so its "invisible". LoL, thats just some google pic, theres plenty of brush and junk in michigan, U have the choice whether or not to drive into it...?
